The Amazing Race 2007

III. Game Information
The activity was taken from the popular reality TV game show, The Amazing Race, in which teams of two race around a certain place (in this case, Santa Rosa City) in competition with other teams. Contestants strive to arrive first at the end of each leg of the race to avoid the possibility of elimination. There are clues in each leg that point the teams to the next destination or direct them to perform a task, either together or by a single member. Contestants travel to and within multiple venues in Santa Rosa in a variety of transportation modes, including jeepney, pedicabs and tricycle. 1

The challenges include buying different goods from the local market, a choice of eating super hot pancit canton and drinking of special juice or counting all characters of Psalm 121, another choice of eating balinghoys or selling them with another team, finding the longest entry in Word Factory, Bible quizzes (Old and New Testaments), napkin folding and finding the hidden bubble gum and answering Sudoku.

* Held May 19, 2007, Saturday

V. Reflections

After the game, we had a short meeting to discuss the experiences and reflections about The Amazing Race. Here are some of the questions answered by the participants:

a. What were your best and worst experiences?
- favors and fun during the race
- false accusations
- pressure
- physical challenges and Bible challenges proved that players lack training and focus
- inexperience to do the unusual (or coming out of the comfort zone)

b. What are the lessons you have learned?
- how to handle pressure
- the need to budget and spend money wisely
- never lose hope (from Gray team who were the last place for 9 challenges)
- as a team, you and your partner complement each other, meaning, his weakness is your strength, and vice-versa
- "Honesty is the best policy"

c. What have you observed from, during and after the game?
- tiring and exhausting because of the weather condition (hot temperature)
- players became the focus of some people, head-turners
- some say the challenges were "practical and easy"

d. How would you relate the game to what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:24?
Focus on the prize and not on your opponents. Do everything to win but play the game according to its rules and never lose hope. Encourage each other as long as the race is not over. (Hebrews 3:13)

e. If there will be another Amazing Race, will you join?
Majority of the players say "Yes, I will join the next Amazing Race".

f. And what are your suggestions for improving the game?
- additional challenges --- more physical and "mas malayo ang mga pupuntahan", suman-making, use of bicycle, etc.
- add places like Pooc and Daang-Bakal
- additional props like team uniform (e.g. head-band or official t-shirt) for distinction
- promote delegation or division of labor
- no to "distractions" like cell-phone, extra money, etc.
